Winning the Residential Compact New Home up to 150m2 Architectural Design Award, Bernie Kose of BK Design achieved what to some can seem impossible - he designed a practical, affordable, clever and incredibly attractive home for a young family. While still providing three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a large outdoor living space!
With a maximum budget of $250,000 to spend on the build, Bernie says it was key that the design be of a minimal nature with maximum use of space. In addition, due to existing foundations already on site, Bernie had to overcome a challenge set by his clients.
"With a partially completed in-ground foundation structure already on site the clients asked to utilise these existing footings as opposed to removing them. Luckily, the location of the existing footings enabled us to position the house so that it was north facing," said Kose.
Thankfully it all worked out for the best and the small family home on a beautiful bush clad site is dynamic, interesting and a testament to Bernie Kose and his design team.
Bernie Kose and his practice BK Design has been in operation since 1992. Their motto that good design is fundamental to all architecture no matter how large or modest definitely came into its own when developing this thoughtful and unique build.
ADNZ CEO, Astrid Andersen, said that it was important to highlight how affordable does not mean cheap and elegance can be achieved on a budget.
"This home is really a fantastic example of what can be achieved on a budget. There is an expectation that building is expensive, but Bernie has shown that good design does not always have to mean big budget. It is small and perfectly formed and will be a wonderful home for this family. Well done Bernie," says Astrid.
