With sustainability forefront of mind, the winning three designers took away four awards. The award winners are Maurice Regeer of MnM Design, Tony Biesiek of Imagine Building Design, and Steven Dixon of Imagine Building Design.
Maurice Regeer, a major winner on the night, captivated the judges with his uncomplicated but striking design ‘Kowhai Cabin’ which earned the Residential Compact New Home up to 150m2 Architectural Design Award and the Residential Interiors Architectural Design Award. With its raw form and finishes, the property sits gently in its surroundings creating a dialogue between interior and exterior that is honest and authentic. Untreated Siberian larch cladding is combined with charred larch in feature areas cutting into the main volume. Upon entry, magnificent framed views are ready for the taking, with the mountain on one side and sky, trees and open fields on the other side.
Friday night also shined the ADNZ awards’ spotlight on Wellington’s standout design talent, with residential and commercial spaces pushing the boundaries with form and function. This year, four awards, one highly commended, and three commends were awarded to four designers in the Wellington regional round. The award winners are Ben Gilpin of Gil-plans Architecture, Matthew Janes of PAK Design, James Mackie of Mackit Architecture, and Lee Turner of Turner Road Architecture.
Ben Gilpin took away three awards for his residential design ‘Waterfall Road’ scooping the Residential New Home between 150m2 and 300m2 Architectural Design Award. A 10 hectare site covered in Kanuaka and naturally regenerating native forests provided a beautiful backdrop for a retreat-like home that could nestle into its setting. A long, narrow cut platform set the parameters of a home that would be spacious but not excessive. The responsive design provided a canvas for the client’s extensive art works. Light and contemporary in style, the home maximises the panoramic views on offer.
