An historic worker’s cottage, a Chinese Methodist Church and a contemporary home inspired by mid-century modern architecture were just a few of the homes celebrated at the 2016 Canterbury/Westland Regional ADNZ | Resene Architectural Design Awards.

Ben Brady of Linetype Architectural is a new entrant to the awards and received recognition for three projects. The former sheet metal worker with a background in fine arts established his career under the guidance of fellow award winner, Cymon Allfrey.

This week Defign blog explores Ben's Hanmer House design - a clean, modern home inspired by the charm of the traditional kiwi bach achieved at just over $550,000.

Using a palette of natural materials including plywood, recycled rimu flooring, sisal carpeting and solid oak, the homeowner’s artwork "pops" against the neutral backdrop of warm greys.

A secret master bedroom suite is accessed via the living room providing a romantic seclusion away from the bustle of family life.

Internal glazing to the exposed central truss of the living room, along with a framed glazed cavity slider, provides acoustic separation between the T.V. room and living areas – perfect for keeping the peace on a rowdy rugby night!

Slider-over-cladding joinery configurations offer generous oversize openings and easy connections to each living space.

Judge’s said the home was a well-proportioned composition with a warm and muted palette.

In addition to Ben Brady’s Hanmer design, a staggering 15 projects were recognised in the Canterbury region.

This year is a very special year for ADNZ as the organisation celebrates its 50th year. ADNZ CEO, Astrid Andersen, said the awards are a key part of the organisation's success and are a true reflection of New Zealand design.

"Our Canterbury designers produce intriguing and beautiful designs year after year. Congratulations to Ben Brady and the ten designers who received awards on Friday night. ADNZ makes it a priority to celebrate and showcase New Zealand design, so our awards are a very proud time of year for us. All the hard work that our designers put in is rewarded and the few who reach the top, get the recognition they so very much deserve," said Andersen.

Regional awards held across the country throughout June and July lead up to the national awards which will be held on Friday 28 October, 2016.
