Intelligent design: the common denominator

Intelligent design: the common denominator add

From a new build intergenerational family asset nesting into its landscape, to a Californian Bungalow led gently and gloriously into the modern era, intelligent design was the common denominator between the award winners honoured in this year’s Canterbury/Westland and Nelson/Marlborough ADNZ | Resene Architectural Design Awards.

True testament to the geographically diverse design talent in our midst, the annual awards shine the spotlight on a showcase of some of New Zealand’s most beautiful and bold residential and commercial creations. The designs are cognisant of their surroundings, sensitive to the needs of their inhabitants, respectful to the environment, and restless in their determination to delight the senses.

This year, ten awards, five highly commends, and four commends were awarded to nine designers in the Canterbury/Westland regional round – the most highly awarded region in New Zealand. The award winners were Cymon Allfrey of Cymon Allfrey Architects, Kelly Rush of Krush Architecture, Nicholas Mann of AO Architecture, Greg Young of Young Architects, Marcus Stufkens of SC Architects LTD, Warren Clark of Nook Architectural, Glenn Murdoch of Theca Group, Nic Curragh of Objects Ltd and Fiona Macpherson of Fiona Macpherson Ltd.

The Residential Multi-Unit Dwelling Architectural Design Award was awarded to ‘Latimer’ by Kelly Rush. Three large, modern-styled high spec townhouses on a main road in the heart of the city offer privacy in a busy urban setting. Light, bright and spacious, the properties feel more like homes than apartments thanks to their overwhelming sense of space and style. Precast panels are broken up with a mix of dark stained vertical cedar cladding and custom folded matt black facade panels.

The same commitment to ingenuity was echoed in the Nelson/Marlborough regional round, with one award and two commends awarded to two designers. The award winners are Todd Karsten of Karsten Architectural Design Ltd and David Todd of David Todd Ltd.
Tony Karsten’s ‘Atawhai House’ was the winner of the Resene Colour in Design Award and also received a Commended in the Residential New Home between 150m2 and 300m2 category.
A four bedroom house, with a beautiful outlook over the Nelson Haven, Atawhai lightly touches the land and is compelling without drawing unnecessary attention to itself. A long, low form ensures the property respectively resides on the hill while maximising panoramic views. A simple form and clean lines contribute to an anything-but-ordinary design that pays homage to the surrounding vegetation, and the ash coloured cedar exterior is mimicked by the simple but stunning oak kitchen.
