Otago / Southland Dominate add

Otago/Southland led the way at this year’s ADNZ | Resene Architectural Design Awards with the region taking out the highest number of regional awards.

Fourteen stunning buildings in the Otago/Southland region were recognised for their architectural design excellence at a function on Friday 4 July, with General Manager of ADNZ, Astrid Andersen, commenting that the quality of designs from the region was excellent.

And it wasn't all stunning new homes and refurbishments that captured the judge's eye. The Cadbury World Cafe took out the Commercial Interior Architectural Design Award and the Colour in Design Award, with the judges saying that the bright colours and inventive touches invested the space with liveliness. It certainly sounds like a place to visit - and not just because of the factory outlet store - but because of the clever use of what was previously a truck driveway space.

Several sophisticated homes in the region also received recognition with judges comparing the winner of the Residential Interiors Architectural Design Award to an Armani suit. The work, completed by Nathan Taylor of Taylored Spaces Ltd on the Grendon Street property, creates a classy and comfortable living environment with a crisp, highly graphic composition of black, white and silver.

IL Viaggio, a home overlooking the Shotover River designed by Gary Todd of Gary Todd Architecture received the Residential New Home over 300m2 award (sponsored by James Hardie). Set on a 10 acre rural block, this Central Otago modernist home merges into the terraces overlooking the Shotover River, stretched East West to offer views of Coronet Peak and surrounding mountains to the North and Ferry Hill to the South.
