Rocking the Hill

Rocking the Hill add

Located in the stunning lower slopes of Canterbury's Kennedy's Bush, Rockhill Residence has been a pin up at this year's ADNZ | Resene Architectural Design Awards - and with good reason. The home's raw and rough concrete facade, combined with elegant, sharp angular modern design, is truly spectacular.

Putting the spotlight on the expansive, ever changing, views of the Canterbury plains and Southern Alps - Robert Weir went about designing a home that embraced the landscape - both inside and out of the home. Providing extensive outdoor entertaining areas in conjunction with floor to ceiling glazed indoor living spaces, the home is a celebration of nature's beauty.

Robert said it was important that the owners could easily access the outdoors from many different locations and so provided several outdoor living spaces that each responded well in different weather conditions.

"The outdoor living areas extend the house out into the landscape. The various areas provide a contrast of differing spaces, from the intimacy within the rear covered courtyard to the open nature of the north facing floating and cantilevered decks. The raised lawn also overlooks a mass of native plantings below," said Robert.

Not only bringing the outside in through masses of glass, the strong exterior of the home is replicated within the house in a variety of different ways. The fireplace is plated with natural Timaru bluestone cut in varying thickness which emulates the exterior walls. The bathroom walls feature long horizontal black woodgrain tiles and the kitchen benchtops and joinery take their cue from the composite aluminum shades.

Astrid Andersen said that Robert Weir was a deserving winner.

"Weir's design takes full advantage of the home's dramatic location and clever positioning. The Residential New Home is a popular category and I am delighted to see a Christchurch home take out the top spot. Well done to Robert."

Since winning the award for best Residential New Home - over 300 m2 for his work on Rockhill Residence, Robert has launched his own practice Weir Architecture. ADNZ wish him all the best in his new venture.
