A creative and elegant design of two family homes caught the eye of judges at this year's ADNZ | Resene Architectural Design Awards.

Designed toward a beautiful outlook onto Wairarapa Stream in urban Christchurch, each dwelling is similar in form and maximises its building envelope, creating luxuriously large internal living spaces.

Gleneagles Terrace by Craig South of Cymon Allfrey Architects won the Residential Multi-Unit Dwelling Architectural Design Award. The homes were praised by the judges who commented the design's two parts constitute its compositional whole.

"A unifying architectural vocabulary of common elements and details articulate an exemplar of high-end urban infill housing", the judges said.

The site itself is special, located at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac, with a narrow street frontage opening out to a wide North-East facing boundary on the edge of the stream. Craig South said this provided the opportunity for both units to have a stream outlook but also removed a large portion of the site due to planning restrictions along the water's edge.

"The design was focussed on the stream", said Craig.

"As both families sought a similar outcome, the design solution was to create two elongated dwellings, each positioned to push their outdoor courtyards towards the stream."

What could easily have been a single building was split to provide an enticing glimpse of the waterway through a narrow separation. The dwellings are also slightly offset, giving each home the position to receive an abundance of natural light, without compromising the privacy of living spaces.

Each home offers multiple living spaces tailored to suit the individual dynamics and needs of each family.

The design provides strong links from the interior spaces to the landscaped outdoor courtyards enticing the eye towards the stream.

Inside, raking ceilings on both levels maximise light and volume and accentuate the connection with the exterior landscaping. Living spaces are connected by sliding doors which can be opened up or closed off to suit the occasion, both giving access to the expansive outdoor living area.

Cymon Allfrey Architects Limited received two out of eight national awards from nearly 150 entries at this year's ADNZ | Resene Architectural Design Awards. In addition to the award for Gleneagles Terrace, Don Roy and Cymon Allfrey won the Residential New Home over 300sqm Architectural Design Award for Bradnor Road, also in Christchurch.
