Mt Maunganui's Jonathan McAlpine of Thorne Group Architecture was the standout designer at the 2017 Bay of Plenty Regional ADNZ | Resene Architectural Design Awards, held in Hamilton on Friday.

Jonathan McAlpine's top award of the night was the Residential Interiors Architectural Design Award for a Tauriko home. He also received a Resene Colour in Design Award and a Commended in the Residential New Home over 300m2 category for a country farmhouse on the hill in Welcome Bay, as well as a Commended for a weatherboard villa in the same category. He was also Commended for his Ocean Beach Road project in the Residential New Home between 150m2 and 300m2 category.

The Tauriko home's winning interior design is inspired by natural elements, described by the designer as ‘current and timeless'.

'The interiors are a combination of organic materials and a modern interpretation of traditional design,' Jonathan says.

The home has a warmth and a presence that is captured in its details.

The layering of timber finishing is complemented by restful, natural colours and organic fibres.

A window seat wrapped in American oak and softened by natural fibre squabs helps to extend the kitchen and removes the need for a family room by providing a place to read, relax, and socialise.

Jonathan has used two different carpets to create zones and variance in the palate - a harder wearing, textured man-made sisal has been laid in the lounge and a plush loop piled wool gives bedrooms softness and warmth.

Judges described the home as 'tactile' and noted the subtly lit cedar spine as ‘the main ordering device in a simple linear plan which is offset by neutral tones throughout the remainder of the house'.

Pitched feature ceilings in the kitchen and dining areas create a sense of volume and light and the multi-functional spaces feel intimate as well as open.

An over-sized barn door is a surprise feature connecting dining and kitchen areas.

The awards ceremony in Hamilton celebrated both Bay of Plenty and Waikato 2017 Regional ADNZ | Resene Architectural Design Award winners.

Next week defign will feature a Waikato winner announced at the ceremony. Here is the list of winners from both regions announced on Friday night:
